Volunteers - Introduction - FAQ's

Our Volunteers provide the backbone of SERVE’s commitment to the community. On cost grounds alone and without them, the majority of our services would not be possible. Volunteers come to us for many reasons. Some are only available to offer a few hours, and some are able to offer more. Whatever time or skills they can provide, SERVE welcome their contribution and every effort is made to ensure they ‘feel part of the family’.

At this present time we have over 70 volunteers in addition to 30 volunteer drivers, whose combined efforts totalled somewhat over 45,000 hours of voluntary service last year!

SERVE are always recruiting volunteers. Even if you can only spare a few hours a week then we would be pleased to hear from you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below are a few questions (and answers) that new volunteers often ask us.

What qualifications do I need?
No formal qualifications are required. It is important that you care about others.

How much time will it take?
We would like a reasonable level of commitment. Please let us know when you are available.

What would I be doing?
There are many areas you could help us in e.g. Day Centre Work, Office Duties, Transport, Be-friending and Shopping.

Am I too old?
It is more important that you are fit and well. Other important qualities are patience, flexibility, personality and kindness?

Would I have to take people to the toilet?
No. This is a job for a paid member of staff, not Volunteers.

Why do you want Volunteers?
We are a Volunteer based organisation and have always encouraged the active participation of Volunteers. Volunteers bring added benefits to SERVE.

Where would I be working in the organisation?
We would discuss this with you. We will of course try to match your wishes and talents to the requirements of SERVE.

Could I claim back my bus fare?
Yes! Our policy is that Volunteers should not be ‘out of pocket’.
Volunteers give of their time and talents.

I’m out of work. Will it affect my benefits?
No. We would suggest that if you have any concerns in this area that you discuss them with the Benefits Agency.

Will there be someone to look after me on my first day?
Yes. You will be guided until you are confident. If you are a driver then we will explain your route carefully.

I work full time. Could I still volunteer?
Sometimes we need people at weekends. Please discuss your availability with us.

Is there any training before I start?
Yes. SERVE is very aware of Health & Safety and other issues. We will take the time to explain important matters to you.
